Ofsted Inspection - St John's Continues to be a Good School

I have pleasure in writing to you regarding our recent Ofsted inspection. The ‘Good’ judgement achieved by the school is very well deserved. I am sure you will join me in congratulating everyone at the school.

In the past two years, St John’s has embraced many changes to the Ofsted Framework. With the Ofsted framework having changed twice since the last inspection (most recently in September 2015) the expectations have risen significantly each time.

Therefore, achieving the rating of good is very pleasing and validates the self-assessment of the leadership team and Governing Body.

I am also pleased that the inspector recognised the tireless hardwork, commitment, dedication and professionalism that occurs every day across the school.

A summary of the report findings include:

  • The school has a culture of high ambition
  • Leaders work effectively as a team to ensure pupils progress well
  • Pupil progress is tracked carefully
  • Teachers are supported to improve successfully
  • A strong sense of community has been built
  • A strong commitment to developing pupils’ wider personal, social and emotional well being
  • Vulnerable groups receive good care, guidance and support
  • Staff show a genuine warmth for pupils
  • A calm and purposeful atmosphere
  • Disadvantaged pupils achieve well and gaps in attainment are diminishing rapidly
  • Strong culture of vigilance to ensure safeguarding is effective

School leaders and governors accept Ofsted’s findings. Leadership and governors were already aware, and working towards improving the next steps identified by Ofsted.

Our good judgement will not bring any complacency and we will continue to focus upon improving the school. A detailed development plan is in place and work to improve assessment is already underway.

I would like to thank all parents and carers who completed the Ofsted survey. Your comments were very helpful. 95% of parents would recommend the school – which is a very high percentage. Thank you.

St John’s will continue to strive to be an open and responsive school in all matters. If you do have any concerns, please contact the school.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff, pupils and governors for their dedication to our school’s improvement over the past two years. They have worked incredibly hard to ensure that we made the necessary improvement to achieve the grading of good.

Your continued support is very much appreciated.
